‘Why religion will make a comeback’

(Or ‘Why predictions of the end of religion are the reverse of the truth’)

It is widely believed that as time goes on the West will become more liberal and more secular and religion will be driven to extinction. But the facts point in the other direction.

According to our next speaker, Dr Eric Kaufmann, what the facts show is that religion is proving to be more robust than many secular thinkers predicted and above all that the higher birth rates of religious believers compared with secularists is going to have a very dramatic impact on the make-up of Western populations over the next few decades. The West will become more religious, not less.

Dr Kaufmann is the author of ‘Shall the Religious Inherit the Earth?’, a ground-breaking new book that is forcing a re-evaluation of the conventional wisdom that secularism will inherit the Earth.

He lectures in politics and sociology at Birkbeck College, University of London.
